Saccharin (E 954) is a non-caloric sweetener that about 550 x sweeter than sugar. Saccharin does not cause tooth decay. The sweetener is colorless, is rapidly absorbed by the human body and excreted unchanged in the urine. Saccharin has virtually no physiological energy content and is therefore, like all sweeteners, suitable for diabetics. Unlike the artificial sweetener aspartame, saccharin is stable when heated, even if acids are present.
At the present time Saccharin is one of the most common sweetener. Saccharin is often used in combination with other sweeteners, both as a diet food, as well as in diet products.
